Education Requirements

Salesperson Licensing Requirements

Prior to becoming a licensed Sales Agent, an individual must take 90 hours of approved education from a certified Real Estate Pre-license School as outlined on the Real Estate Pre-license Education Curriculum.

Note: The Division may issue an Education Waiver to members in good standing with the Utah State Bar. To receive an Education Waiver, submit to the Division documentation of membership in good standing.

Broker Licensing Requirements

Continuing Education Requirements

Certifications are valid for a two-year period and renewal forms will be mailed out six weeks prior to the expiration date.

To renew a license on active status an individual must complete 12 hours of certified Real Estate Continuing Education Courses and/or Online Continuing Education Courses every renewal cycle (two years), including the mandatory three-hour Division Core Course (a minimum of six hours must be "live" education).

Note: You may obtain credit for a non-certified course by submitting to the Division the Non-certified Continuing Education Credit Request.

Note: CE is not required if renewing as inactive but later changing to active status requires proof of 12 hours of CE.

207.2.4.1 A licensee may apply to renew an expired license within thirty days after the expiration date of the license by completing all of the renewal requirements, including the continuing education requirement, and paying a non-refundable late fee.

RECIPROCITY:

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE IN ANOTHER STATE

Utah currently has reciprocity agreements with Colorado, Idaho, Georgia, Montana, Wyoming and Alberta Canada. Applicants with an active Real Estate license in good standing from a state that has a reciprocity agreement with Utah should submit to the Division:

  • Completed and signed Real Estate Reciprocity Application.
  • Original and certified license history (no more than six months old) from the jurisdiction where you are actively licensed and which has a reciprocity agreement with Utah.
  • Original and certified license histories (no more than six months old) from all other jurisdictions where you have previously held a Real Estate license.
  • For Principal and Branch Brokers, a notarized letter on the company's letterhead, signed by a company Officer, Manager/Member or Owner, authorizing the Broker to use the company name.
  • For Sales Agents, two fingerprint cards and a signed Fingerprint Waiver (cards may be obtained from the Division or a local police station).
  • For Sales Agents, $151 total non-refundable fee ($100 application fee, $12 recovery fund fee and $39 fingerprint processing fee).
  • For Brokers, $118 total non-refundable fee ($100 application fee, $18 recovery fund fee).

    Applicants with an active real estate license in good standing from a state that does NOT have a reciprocity agreement with Utah may qualify for a waiver of some education and/or national exam requirements.
