Education Requirements

Salesperson Licensing Requirements

To qualify for a license as a real estate broker, a person shall complete at least sixty contact hours of commission approved real estate education within twenty-four months prior to taking the broker examination. This education shall be in addition to the required salesperson pre-license course. The applicant shall have been a licensed real estate salesperson actively engaged in real estate for a period of at least twenty-four months preceding the date of application, or shall have had experience substantially equal to that which a licensed real estate salesperson would ordinarily receive during a period of twenty-four months, whether as a former broker or salesperson, a manager of real estate, or otherwise.

  • 12 Hours- Introduction to Real Estate Iowa License Law
  • 12 Hours- Ownership, Encumbrances, Legal Descriptions, Transfer of Title and Closing
  • 12 Hours- Contracts, Agency, and Antitrust
  • 12 Hours- Valuation, Finance, and Real Estate Math
  • 12 Hours- Property Management/Leasing, Fair Housing, Environmental Risks, and Health Issues

A qualified applicant for a license as a real estate salesperson shall complete a commission approved short course in real estate education of at least thirty hours during the twelve months prior to taking the salesperson examination.

Salesperson Post-License Requirements

The following courses must be completed at the time of the first renewal to maintain active status. *Not available through home-study.

  • 12 Hours- Developing Professional Ethical Practices
  • 12 Hours- Listing Practices
  • 12 Hours- Buying Practices

Broker Licensing Requirements

  • 8 Hours- Real estate office organization
  • 8 Hours- Human resources management

Continuing Education Requirements

SALESPERSON

  • *Effective for the second renewal and all renewals thereafter. **18 HRS out of the required 36 HRS may be taken by home-study.
  • 8 Hours- Law Update
  • 4 Hours- Ethics
  • 24 Hours- Electives

BROKER

    *18 HRS out of the required 36 HRS may be taken by home-study

Reciprocity

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE IN ANOTHER STATE No reciprocity.

Reporting

CASE MANAGEMENT REQUIREMENTS

Each approved school shall provide an individual certificate of attendance to each licensee upon completion of the course. The certificate shall contain the following information:

  • a. School name and number;
  • b. Program, course or activity name and number;
  • c. Name and address of licensee;
  • d. Date program, course or activity was completed;
  • e. Number of approved credit hours;
  • f. Signature of coordinator or other person authorized by the commission; and
  • g. A notation as to whether credit hours are to be used as pre-license or as continuing education.
